The combination of earthy tahini, bright citrus, and aromatic mint on whole grain bread in this tahini butter toast recipe is like a trip to the Mediterranean—comforting, simple, rustic, and oh so delicious. I like to make this easy recipe for Tahini Butter Toast with Citrus straight from my garden, as I have orange trees and mint growing in my garden most of the year. You can easily find these ingredients in your supermarket or famers market too. Pair those foods with tahini and a good whole grain bread and you are in heaven! These flavor combinations are often on display in many traditional dishes in the Mediterranean, such as from Lebanon, Syria, and Greece. Best yet, with only four ingredients (not including pantry staples) you can get this easy vegan sandwich recipe together in only five minutes. Just spread toasted bread with tahini, arrange sliced oranges and fresh mint over it, season with freshly ground black pepper, and enjoy! This Tahini Butter Toast with Citrus is a go-to for the cool weather season, when citrus is so readily available and at its seasonal best.
Packed with vitamin C, fiber, protein, healthy fats, and minerals, this Tahini Butter Toast with Citrus is a balanced meal that you can easily enjoy for breakfast, snack-time, or lunch or dinner, served with a hearty salad, such as this Tabouleh salad. The recipe is a great plant-based option, and you can easily make it gluten-free by using gluten-free toast.
I love that tahini—a traditional paste made of sesame seeds—is getting it’s due recognition. This traditional food, which is celebrated in the Middle East, has such a lovely, earthy flavor that adds so much pizzazz to everything, from hummus to dressings to cookies. Tahini is excellent served on breads as an alternative to nut butters, and it’s mild flavor pairs well with both sweet and savory toppings. Tahini is not only protein-rich, it is packed with nutrients, even plant-based calcium. I also love the concept of serving whole sliced fruit (ahem, banana sandwich anyone?) on open-face toasts and sandwiches, as a sugar-free, flavorful, nutritious topping. Give this yummy recipe a try!
